High Awards for Micro-Producers Hoot Owl Creek

January 21, 2014

Long known in Alexander Valley, Sonoma County, for their wine grape growing and wine making expertise, but for others, Hoot Owl Creek Vineyards’ owners, brother Clay Green, with sister Alison Doran and husband Mark Doran, now have received recognition for their own products. Fetching accolades of Best of Class and a Gold medal from the esteemed San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, the Hoot Owl Creek Vineyards partners are excited to reveal their Best of Class and Gold medal winners to the public.

The San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, which is held each January at the Cloverdale Citrus Fair in Cloverdale, California, is widely recognized as one of the most prestigious wine competition events held in the United States. Founder Bob Frazier, joined by son Scott, are the organizers for the annual wine judging which asserts being the largest competition of American wines. This is Hoot Owl Creek’s first time entering the event.

Winemaker Alison Green Doran is very pleased with the results, stating that they are, “…astonished and delighted to have this lovely recognition as we are just starting out with our own wines. We know we have a perfect property for Cabernet, and only make 285 cases a year, so this is a wonderful honor.” Having almost cult wine status among their group of “Night Hunter Guest List” purchasers, these family associates are excited to show the public what they can do. Earning not only the high rank of Best of Class for their 2008 Hoot Owl Creek Cabernet Sauvignon, which features all estate fruit and no additions, they have also garnered a Gold medal on their 2011 Owl’s Wing Cabernet, likewise harvested from their property in the heart of Alexander Valley.

Alison Green Doran’s experience of over 30 years of winemaking, and Clay Green’s determination to develop high potential vineyard sites on the family ranch led to the development of Hoot Owl Creek brand and little sister Owl’s Wing. Clay states, “In 2007 we finally decided to draw together our family history and expertise, and put it into the bottle, so that we can share our extraordinary opportunity with others.” Their father, Russ Green, has a long history with the wine industry, and as one-time owner of Simi winery, he was instrumental in organizing an Appellation of Origin for the Alexander Valley (passed in the early 1980’s), and in forming the Alexander Valley Association, benefiting his neighbors and fellow grape growers.

Hoot Owl Creek will be attending the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition Public Tasting, held at Ft. Mason, San Francisco on Feb. 15, 2014, and have been invited to participate in the VIP tasting for high award winners. Their website is
