PlumpJack Group Breaks Ground on Odette Estate
Press Release: The PlumpJack Group has announced the name of its new winery, to be called Odette Estate, on the former Steltzner Vineyards property in Napa Valley’s Stags Leap District. The property includes a historic 36?acre vineyard and a 5,000-square foot winery with 18,000 square feet of caves (one of the first modern caves built in Napa Valley).
The property was purchased earlier this year by PlumpJack co founders Gavin Newsom and Gordon Getty, along with John Conover, general manager of PlumpJack Winery and general manager and partner of CADE Winery and Odette Estate. The Steltzner vineyard was the second in the district planted to cabernet sauvignon grapes, following one planted in the 1960s by Nathan Fay, now owned by Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars. In addition to cabernet sauvignon, the vineyard is planted to merlot, malbec, cabernet franc, and a small amount of tintoria and pinotage. The PlumpJack Group bought some of the vineyard’s grapes from the 2011 vintage and will release the wine in 2013. Approximately 10,000 cases of Odette Estate cabernet sauvignon will be produced annually.
“PlumpJack was presented with an opportunity to purchase an exceptional vineyard from pioneering grape grower Dick Steltzner,” Conover said. “The unique terroir of this vineyard reflects our vision and commitment to estate?grown wines, allows us to produce wines from the Stags Leap District, and helps meet a growing demand for exceptional wines.”
Jeff Owens, who has been with the PlumpJack Group since 2006, working as assistant winemaker at CADE, will serve as winemaker for Odette Estate. Nils Venge, award winning consultant for both CADE and PlumpJack Winery, will continue to serve as a mentor to Owens and will remain an integral part of the winemaking team. The caves are currently being updated and retrofitted. The new winery will be designed by renowned young Hispanic architect Juancarlos Fernandez, whose striking modern design of CADE Winery, among other projects, has drawn widespread acclaim. The vineyards are also being re-planted and are currently undergoing conversion to 100 percent organic farming, in accordance with the PlumpJack Group’s continued commitment to organic viticulture. The new winery will be LEED certified.
A redesigned tasting room will open at Odette Estate in August 2012, and will feature PlumpJack and CADE wines as well as a new line, Adaptation, a selection of wines that will focus on the Napa Valley appellation and will be available through the tasting room. The redesigned hospitality center, designed by Napa-based Shopworks Design, will be open to the public. Construction of the new winery and hospitality center will be completed by the end of 2013.
