Linfield to Offer New Wine Immersion Program

McMINNVILLE – Linfield College will launch a wine industry immersion program this summer, adding another component to its wine education offerings.

This program is open to Linfield students interested in exploring the wine industry, as well as students from other colleges and universities and to members of the general public. The eight-week program, beginning June 14, will be based on a series of field trips to local vineyards and wineries. In addition to meeting with key wine industry experts, the visits will include hands-on experiences in the various aspects of grape growing, winemaking, marketing, sales and hospitality. Participants completing this program will get a behind the scenes understanding of what it takes to be successful in this dynamic and growing industry.

“This program offers the unique opportunity to fully immerse yourself in this multifaceted business,” according to Michael Hampton, director of Career Development at Linfield. “Learning directly from wine professionals and applying what you learn allows for a rich understanding of the depth and complexity of the industry. The program will provide a breadth of knowledge and experience that will be particularly beneficial for those interested in working in the wine industry.”

Jeff Peterson, director of the Linfield Center for the Northwest (LCN) and coordinator of the wine studies minor, will lead the immersion program. Peterson has worked extensively with the local wine industry to create learning opportunities and internships for Linfield students.

Ellen Brittan, Linfield’s director of wine education, will help coordinate the program and access to experiential opportunities within the wine community. Brittan, owner of Brittan Vineyards near McMinnville, has extensive experience in the wine industry and currently serves on the board of the International Pinot Noir Celebration (IPNC), is chair emerita of the Oregon Wine Board and past president of the Oregon Winegrowers Association.

Linfield has a long history of collaboration with the wine industry, including hosting the world-renowned IPNC since its inception 30 years ago. Over the past several years, Linfield faculty have been increasingly involved with the industry through collaborative research projects in biology, marketing, history and management. Career exploration classes focusing on wine-related topics have resulted in internships with local wineries. Other students have worked closely with local winery owners collecting and cataloging materials for the Oregon Wine History Archives and the Oregon Wine History Project, housed at Linfield College.

Most recently, Linfield implemented a new wine studies minor focusing on educating students from a variety of perspectives. The minor will benefit the local wine industry by producing graduates who have a broad understanding of the world of wine that, combined with their major area of study, will better prepare them for a role in the wine industry.

In addition, Linfield’s Online and Continuing Education program launched online certificates in wine management and wine marketing and is introducing a new series of enrichment workshops that include several wine-related topics.
