Torre Testa 2017 Debuts with a New Label

Brindisi 05/11/2020 – December will see the release of Tenute Rubino’s cru Torre Testa Doc Brindisi 2017, donning for the first time a brand-new label designed to fully express the unicity of this monovarietal Susumaniello, the vertex of the company’s qualitative pyramid. This particular vintage has just been awarded Bibenda’s coveted Five Grapes, the highest score given by the prestigious wine guide published every year by the Italian Sommelier Federation.

The 2017 vintage of our Torre Testa Doc Brindisi is the result of a very particular climate trend, as the abundant rainfall of the spring season supported the vegetative development of the vines and replenished the water reserves of the Jaddico estate. Summer was warm and devoid of excessive spikes in temperature, ideal micro-climatic conditions for Susumaniello, which loves a longer and steadier ripening time. A balanced season thanks also to the mitigating action of the northerly and north-westerly winds coming in from the sea, which ensured the good health and integrity of the clusters. “Perfect grapes, slightly smaller than average with a perfectly balanced skin to pulp ratio”, company owner Luigi Rubino says of the 2017 harvest, rigorously performed by hand, of Susumaniello – the beating heart of the Brindisi DOC and of Tenute Rubino’s recovery project. “The project has been pioneered by my family and now many wine makers have joined us in believing in the potential of this important native varietal”.

Torre Testa is the embodiment and the highest expression of the company’s Susumaniello project, and this is reflected in its newly designed packaging. The restyling process has been long and careful, a complete revolution in the visual impact of this historic label. A process overseen by Romina Leopardi, Tenute Rubino’s head of marketing and communication, leading a team of professionals and creatives specialised in wine brand design and communication. A graphic revolution aimed at reaching a target of aware and savvy consumers, who show increasing attention towards the value and the peculiarities of each terroir. The new label expresses craftmanship and a closeness to the world of contemporary visual art, through a renewed use of pictorial expression, as evidenced by the “brushstroke” of colour that brings to mind the hue of the Susumaniello grape skins and the "juicy and dense" stain they leave on the hands when picked.

With its intense and inky ruby red colour, Torre Testa 2017 Doc Brindisi stands out for its notes of very ripe red fruit, such as plum and liqueur cherry, giving way to hints of fruit preserve and dark chocolate, spicy notes of cinnamon, black pepper and nutmeg.

“Torre Testa 2017 is, compared to our past four or five vintages, the most successful in embodying the distinctive character we have always strived to achieve – Luigi Rubino concludes – Complexity, depth and elegance for a red which has become an important reference point for the Brindisi Doc. Torre Testa is a niche product, only a few thousand bottles are produced each year for a select number of Italian and international buyers and a small following of collectors and connoisseurs who recognise the excellent ageing prospects of this wine.  A true vin de garde”.
