Paula Kornell Sparkling Wine Unveils Rare Bottling for Premiere Napa Valley 2020

Posted on February 12, 2020

St. Helena, Calif.—Paula Kornell Sparkling Wine will make its debut at Premiere Napa Valley with an auction lot like no other: a literal time capsule in bottle featuring a special dosage of wines dating back to the 1970s made by her father and winemaker Hanns Kornell.

The 2018 Paula Kornell Napa Valley Blanc de Noirs is assembled from four different cuve´es. The final blend—42% Pinot Noir and 58% Chardonnay—comes from grapes sourced exclusively from Mitsuko’s Vineyard, located on the Napa side of the cool Los Carneros AVA. To distinguish her Premiere Napa Valley auction lot, Paula worked with the winemaking team to add a special dosage made up of library wines from her father’s eponymous winery, Hanns Kornell Champagne Cellars.

Aptly named “Something Old, Something New,” this auction lot brings the legacy of the Kornells and Napa Valley sparkling made using Me´thode Champenoise full circle. Paula’s father Hanns was a true pioneer, the first to make sparkling wine in California using the traditional method, and now Paula follows in his footsteps with her own sparkling wine brand.

“I remember working alongside my father when some of these historic wines we’ve used in the dosage were released.” says owner and vintner Paula Kornell. “Now, to have them incorporated into my own brand is truly a milestone in my life.”

While the 2018 is a hallmark Blanc de Noirs from Los Carneros with finesse and elegance, the addition of the historic wines to the blend adds depth and complexity, toasting a rich history and building on Paula’s family legacy of crafting the finest sparkling wines.

Paula Kornell Sparkling Wine will also stand out at this year at the 24th annual Premiere Napa Valley as one of only two sparkling wine producers participating in the live auction, held on February 22, 2020. The auction Lot #184 consists of five cases of this rare 2018 Blanc de Noirs bottling with a release date of October 2021.
