Waipapa Bay Wines Offer a Taste of the "New" New Zealand

Posted on December 05, 2018

SONOMA, CA (December 4, 2018)–Waipapa Bay Wines, a New Zealand family-owned and operated winery, has announced the release of the 2018 vintage wines in the USA. The joint venture is the latest discovery of Broadland Wineries, whose dedication to introducing innovative and modern styles of wine to the US consumer inspired a partnership with New Zealand natives Brent and Shirley Rawstron.

Waipapa Bay represents a new wave in New Zealand winemaking that is motivated by improving quality in the vineyard and winery to create wines that evoke a sense of place. The wines challenge the preconceptions of the overt, in-your-face style of Marlborough, offering instead elegance, finesse, and freshness.

“The style of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc that is most commonly seen around the world can be quite aggressive and intrusive in aroma and flavor profile,” says Broadland Wineries’ Master of Wine Dr. Arabella Woodrow. “Waipapa Bay offers a more elegant style that expresses the unique climate and soils of the region.”

Dr. Woodrow is Broadland Wineries’ Director of Wine and works closely with the Rawstrons to showcase the regions’ ideal soils and climate through the lenses of four wines: Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and Canterbury Rosé – now available through Publix Super Markets in the southeast – and Pinot Gris and Chardonnay, also from Marlborough.

Food-friendly wines are increasingly in demand among US drinkers and Waipapa Bay’s restrained and balanced style offers a clear affinity for food. The wines share a backbone of vibrant acidity and integrated flavors that are well suited to a range of dishes that extend beyond obvious pairings such as fish and other seafood.

About Waipapa Bay

Family owned and operated by the Rawstrons and in collaboration with Master of Wine Dr. Arabella Woodrow, Waipapa Bay Wines reflect and respect the stunning, natural beauty of the place they take their name from – Waipapa Bay. With vineyards in Marlborough and Canterbury, the winery strives to produce wines with elegance and a sense of place from grapes farmed with the utmost attention and care. The close proximity to the Pacific Ocean provides ideal climatic conditions for the vines to thrive and gives a signature fresh character that carries through each of the four wines.
