Francis Ford Coppola Winery Launches New Sofia Red Wine This Valentine's Day
GEYSERVILLE, Calif. (February 13, 2015) – Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Francis Ford Coppola Winery’s president and director of winemaking Corey Beck announced today the newest addition to the winery’s popular Sofia label – the 2013 Sofia Red. A Rhône blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre grapes all grown in California’s Paso Robles appellation, the Sofia Red is the first red wine to join the Sofia family of wines, which originated with the introduction of the Sofia Blanc de Blancs sparkling wine sixteen years ago.
The Sofia Red, a lighter bodied red wine with elegant fruit expressions and a touch of spice, is a true reflection of Sofia Coppola’s wine style – which comes from spending time in France where she’s gained a fondness and true appreciation for the Rhône varietals.
“As the Sofia line has grown, it was only natural to add a red,” said Sofia Coppola. “So I asked Corey Beck to make something tasty and easy for an everyday wine, something that's more in the lighter style of a Rhone and not a big typical Napa red.”
“Sofia and I collaborated on the addition of a red wine to the collection, one that would complement the existing white wines, but at the same time offer consumers an exciting contrasting wine with vibrant character,” says Corey Beck. “The timing of the project was perfect. The 2013 growing season was one of the best in California’s grapegrowing history, which is reflected in Sofia Red’s elevated flavor concentration and overall balance.”
The Sofia wine tradition began with the sparkling Blanc de Blancs, a gift to Sofia from her iconic filmmaker father Francis Ford Coppola. Over the years the Sofia collection has expanded to include the ever-popular Sofia Minis (the same effervescent Sofia Blanc de Blancs blend in stylishly portable pink 187 milliliter cans), Riesling, Rosé, Chardonnay and now Sofia Red.
A blend of 62% Grenache, 37% Syrah, and 1% Mourvèdre, Sofia Red displays pleasant aromas of red cherries, pomegranate, and tea leaves with an alluring touch of tangerine. Soft and plush in the mouth with a light, graceful balance, there are bright flavors of plums and boysenberries, aromatic spices and a hint of bergamot and cardamom. The perfect pairing for grilled salmon, linguine with pesto sauce or paired with Sofia’s favorite, dark chocolate with cocoa nibs.
The 2013 Sofia Red retails for $17 SRP and may be purchased at participating restaurants and retailers, at the winery or by visiting www.francisfordcoppolawinery.com/store.
