Rome-Key Estates, the producer of Sunset Hills Vineyard and 50 West Vineyards wines, operates 55 acres across four vineyard sites including two in the Shenandoah Valley. We are passionate about elevating Virginia’s reputation as a premier wine region and delivering the best wine and winery experiences in the state. As part of this mission, we are seeking a talented Cellar Master to help in creating world class wines. This may be an Assistant Winemaker or Associate Winemaker position for the right person.
Role Overview:
Working with and under the direction of the winemaker, you will perform hands-on production work that encompasses everything from receiving fruit to bottling. This position requires attention to detail, adherence to established winemaking protocols, and a keen desire for cleanliness and orderliness. Depending on your background and the title offered, you may be asked to perform more independent winemaking duties where your creative input is valued and important to the role. If you have sparkling wine production experience, your position may encompass duties in a new sparkling wine facility currently being built with state-of-the-art equipment.
Key Responsibilities:
• Hands-on cellar operations including crush pad, laboratory, barrel work, and sanitation
• Record keeping of all cellar additions and movements with data entry into the compliance database (Vintrace)
• Laboratory analysis: pH, dissolved oxygen, Sentia Wine Analyzer, collection/packaging of sample for off-site analysis
• Vineyard sampling & analysis
• Forklift operation
Desired Qualifications:
• B.S. in Viticulture/Enology, life science, or a related field plus 3+ harvests experience (Winemaker positions)
• High School diploma and 3+ years of hands-on cellar production experience (Cellar Master position)
• Strong written and verbal communication skills; adept in Microsoft Office
• Flexibility to work extended hours and weekends as needed
