The Gainey Vineyard is seeking an Enologist. Be a vital part of one of the premier winemaking brands in the Santa Ynez Valley. You will have the unique opportunity to work with fruit and wines from our 3 different estate vineyards that span the Santa Ynez Valley and Sta Rita Hills Appellation.
The Enologist position at the Gainey Vineyard provides critical and time sensitive support to the production department and Winemaker. Reliability and accuracy in this position are paramount. The Enologist reports directly to the Winemaker.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Follow all company policies and procedures
Responsible for overall maintenance and cleanliness of the lab.
Responsible for stocking and managing all lab supplies.
Competent in all lab analyses, generating analytical results accurately and efficiently to determine and implement wine actions needed.
Comprehensive understanding of wine chemistry and the ability to self-diagnose and troubleshoot problematic chemistry results in the lab.
Monitor fermentations and record daily brix/temps as well as follow all fermentation trends to ensure completion of primary fermentation in the cellar.
Communicate daily with Winemaker to address any/all possible fermentation issues proactively to prevent stuck/sluggish ferments in the cellar.
Record lab data in production database and generate spreadsheet reports for Winemaker to review.
Perform calculations for wine amendments and movement.
Prepare and ship out samples for outside analysis.
Follow and observe all safe laboratory practices.
Periodical calibrations of laboratory equipment to ensure accuracy of results.
Execute various bench top trials as needed per Winemaker’s request.
Harvest – the ability and understanding to assist in the cellar when time allows, assist with supervising interns, assist with running all processing equipment.
Ability to smell/taste defects in wines throughout the entire winemaking process and keep constant communication with these findings to Winemaker.
Support safe work habits and a safe working environment at all times.
Ability to come to work regularly and on time, to follow directions, to take feedback, to get along with co-workers and supervisors respectfully.
Following and observing all safe cellar practices.
Perform all standard bottling QC and relay information to Winemaker and bottling line operators.
Available and willing to participate in off-site wine tastings as well as onsite wine club events.
Performs and records all changes to monthly bulk inventory. Reports monthly changes to accounting department and Winemaker.
Perform vineyard sampling as needed.
Contribute to continuous improvement of winemaking processes and procedures.
Maintain an open mind and willingness to perform daily tasks and responsibilities as they pertain to our SOPs and guidelines.
Participates in all production safety trainings.
Works closely with cellar master to ensure all chemical additions are calculated and added accurately to wine.
Bachelors Degree in Enology, Chemistry, or related food science field.
2 years of “hands-on” wine production experience including laboratory work desired.
Experience with both the practical and technical aspects of the winemaking process.
Understanding of harvest workflows, fermentation, cellar work, and wine analysis desired.
Ability to work in a fast paced environment while maintaining schedules and deadlines in the laboratory.
Flexibility and a positive mindset is needed.
Must maintain a high level of written and verbal communication at all times.
Strong computer and database management experience.
The ability to work in a standing position for long periods of time (up to 8 hours), walk, sit, reach, bend, stoop, climb, frequently lift up to 35 pounds, and occasionally lift/move 50 pounds is required.
