Job Description:

SUMMARY: This position will be part of a unified wine production team, perform all lab duties as assigned by the Assistant Winemaker and Lab Supervisor and assist with lab organization, cleanliness, and communication in all phases of the wine production process.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
General Laboratory (70%)
•  Perform daily analysis in a timely manner: routine chemical analyses include sulfur, TA/pH, alcohol, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, and enzymatics (RS, ML, VA, YAN)
•  Assist with wine monitoring throughout the aging process by sampling barrels and tanks cleanly and according to appropriate SOPs
•  Prepare and standardize lab solutions
•  Perform daily lab instrumentation startup and shutdown, including updating daily records of equipment calibration and standardization
•  Maintain a clean and safe work environment and a clean break area, use appropriate personal protective equipment, and report any equipment problems to supervisor immediately
•  Timely and accurate data entry and communication of analysis into lab logbooks, Excel spreadsheets, and NAV database
•  Sample wine inventory for winemaker tasting and for blending; create lab blends for bottling blend trials for Duckhorn Vineyards
•  Demonstrate dependability, initiative, and interpersonal skills and adapt rapidly to change
•  Perform additional tasks and analysis as required by the Lab Supervisor; may include some cellar work as needed

Harvest (20%)
•  Perform analysis on grape samples, including Brix, TA, and pH
•  Crush grape samples for analysis and maintain a clean crush setup; communicate grape analysis rapidly to Winemakers and Grower Relations team
•  Monitor fermentations by daily Brix and temperature checks, as well as sensory analysis
•  Assist with cellar tasks as needed, including grape sorting, bin washing, and adding nutrients to fermentations

Bottling (10%)
•  Assist with bottling tasks on the line, including empty wine bottles onto bottling line, carry out quality control inspection of wine bottles, pack finished goods into cases, glue cases, and stack finished goods into required pallet configuration
•  Perform laboratory bottling QC, including analysis of wine before and after bottling, packaging checks, and line startup checks

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
•  Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Fermentation Science, Enology, or equivalent
•  Advanced English communication skills, including reading and writing
•  Verbal Spanish communication a plus
•  Moderate math and analytical skills
•  Proficient computer skills with the basic Microsoft applications, Word and Excel; experience with Microsoft Navision a plus
•  Self-motivation, strong attention to detail, ability to multitask, and prioritize
•  Adequate manual dexterity, visual acuity, ability to lift 50 lbs.
•  Ability to and willingness to work in various temperatures, outdoor conditions, and varying shifts
•  Weekend work required during the harvest season
•  Positive attitude with a commitment to accuracy, organization, and open communication
