Job Description:

The Director of Communications is responsible for Wine Institute’s media relations, issues management and other external communications including planning and executing media campaigns on key initiatives and issues. The director develops and implements communications to protect and promote the reputation of Wine Institute and the California wine industry including news releases and other communications materials on organizational and industry news and developments.

The director acts as a liaison and spokesperson with media, researching information, crafting responses and briefing spokespeople. The director maintains current statistical information and visual resources on California wine and also serves as liaison with consultants working on key industry issues communications. Like all communications team members, the director works closely and collaboratively with other Wine Institute departments. The director position reports to and works closely with the Vice President of Communication.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Media Relations
•  Develops and implements media outreach plans, communications and responses.
•  Develops relationships with key media and maintains an up-to-date list of media contacts who cover industry issues.
•  Acts as first point of contact on incoming media queries and maintains high standard of responsiveness to media.
•  Acts as a liaison and spokesperson with media, researching information, crafting responses and preparing spokespeople in a timely manner
•  Develops, writes and distributes news releases, media statements, key messaging and other communications on organization and industry issues and developments.
•  Monitors and tracks organizational and industry news and developments.

Issues Management
Develops proactive and strategic communications on significant issues impacting the wine industry.
•  Works with other departments and committees to identify and prioritize areas and issues of risk.
•  Develops creative and compelling narratives to communicate with key audiences on critical industry issues, including information, tools and resources
•  Coordinates with industry stakeholders and issue experts to coordinate responses on issues.
•  Identifies and manages external experts to provide information, quotes and commentary on priority issues.
•  Works with relevant consultants to provide external expertise and capacity to respond to issues.

Member Communications
Supports the creation and execution of member communications.
•  Helps identify appropriate industry, news and organization developments to include in member updates such as news alerts, bi-weekly updates and ongoing communications.
•  Supports strategies to encourage member engagement and participation in key Wine Institute activities and calls to action.
•  Develops materials and messaging to communicate with members on industry and organization updates.

Industry Data/Statistical Information
Researches and prepares wine industry data and information for members, media and staff.
•  Maintains statistical and trend information on California wine and the U.S wine industry as a resource for media, members and staff.
•  Manages creation/curation of compelling visual presentation (charts, infographics, images and other visual assets) working with the communications team and external resources.
•  Works with staff to maintain information on websites and other communication vehicles.

California Wines U.S. Lifestyle Campaign
Supports the execution of programs to enhance the reputation of California wine among key audiences including public officials, media, trade, consumers and other influencers.
•  Supports lifestyle communications campaigns (public relations, social media, consumer website, consumer blog, webinars and events) working with agencies and consultants.
•  Works closely with the International Marketing department on global marketing to ensure alignment and leverage assets and activities.

QUALIFICATIONS/DESIRED SKILLS
•  15+ years of experience in public relations or communications
•  Experience in U.S./California wine and wine industry
•  Knowledge of and interest in policy issues related to wine
•  Significant experience in issues management communications
•  Excellent writing, editing, proofreading and presentation skills; ability to distill complex topics
•  Strong background working with the news media
•  Ability to work under pressure of fast-changing situations and deadlines
•  Strong strategic and creative thinking skills

TECHNOLOGY/TOOLS
•  Experience with email service providers such as MailChimp
•  Experience working with websites on WordPress
•  Proficient in Microsoft Office suite - Word, Excel and PowerPoint
•  Experience with database programs
•  Familiarity with asset management tools such as Canto
•  Basic understanding of Google Analytics, SEO and web traffic metrics
•  Understanding of social media channels and how best to leverage as part of a comprehensive communications strategy
