Owera Vineyards, a winery in Cazenovia New York, is seeking an experienced Winemaker for full time immediate employment. Owera Vineyards is a 57 acre property, 5 acres of which are vineyards producing Minnesota cold hardy varietal grapes. In addition to our estate grown grapes we also purchase grapes from the local Finger Lakes Region, currently we produce 50,000 bottles a year.
This position performs all duties pertinent to the production of premium quality wines. Applicant should have a full understanding of winemaking with hands-on experience in harvest/fermentation, filtering, production/blending, and bottling. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: harvest/crush operations, post-harvest wine management, as well as winery representation and customer relations.
Applicant must be comfortable with vineyard and cellar work. Closely work with our winemaker consultant and interact with customers and staff effectively. Applicant will participate in events and activities geared toward sales and marketing of our wines. Must enjoy people and the tourism aspects of the wine business.
Compensation: Starting Salary $43,680 - Salary commensurate with experience, full benefits, 401K, RELOCATION MONEY
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include managing all aspects of the winemaking process and other assigned duties in accordance with Owera’s policies, principles, and procedures.
Plan production quantities based on inventory
Order all supplies and chemicals necessary for fermentation, winemaking and sanitation
Coordinate grape purchases and deliveries from other wineries and harvest dates with our winery workers
Examine grape samples from our vineyard and from outside growing partners to determine such factors as sugar, acid content, and ripeness.
Harvest and crush operations; be familiar with and able to operate, clean, and sanitize equipment
Cellar and lab work necessary to begin and oversee successful fermentations
Wine production, including filtration and finishing
Perform chemical analysis on all wines and other lab work
Participate in routine inventory tasting and blending sessions
Coordinate bottling and labeling of wines including ordering all necessary supplies
Keep accurate record of all winemaking operations and keep files for federal record
Ensure SUPERIOR cellar sanitation and safety standards
Maintain and update equipment as needed
Organize bonded warehouse and oversee tasting room weekly inventory
Coordinate wine competition entries
Participate in wine training for staff, wine tastings and special events both on and off premise
2.) EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree in Enology/Fermentation Science/Viticulture or related science is preferred.
Minimum 3 years hands-on experience
Vineyard knowledge and experience desirable
Experience with all aspects of harvest, fermentation, cellar work, winemaking analysis, and bottling is preferred.
Self-starter with attention to detail & good project management skills
Available to work a varied schedule during harvest season as needed
Excellent communication skills
Accuracy with numbers and strong recordkeeping skills along with a working knowledge of data collection and data analysis
Proficient in Microsoft Office and ability to navigate proprietary programs & databases
Ability to lift 50+ pounds
Ability and certification to operate a forklift
