This is a unique position which requires advanced viticultural knowledge but not significantly involved in the day-to-day management of vineyard operations. Although this role involves management of a small team during the growing season, this is largely a one-person department who will often personally collect data in the field, manage programs, perform analysis, and liaise with PCAs, vineyard managers, and executive team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Vineyard Technical Management – data and technology-driven activities
Plan, execute, and oversee one or more vineyard technicians to collect data from vineyard blocks.
Crop estimation Program: This position will actively participate in counting and collecting data in the vineyard, analyzing the data, and making recommendations on crop load management with vineyard team.
Maturity Tracking: Manage the seasonal crop estimation and maturity tracking team. Often actively participate in collecting grape samples for maturity tracking. Analyze, summarize, and present data.
Actively oversee the implementation and integration of new technology for viticultural decision-making with vineyard managers, e.g. Ceres multi-spectral imaging, soil moisture probe network, yield monitors, etc. Be a technical liaison to maximize the value and implementation (follow thru!) with this data.
Evaluate software opportunities to increase efficiency in data collection, analysis, and data-based decision-making.
Record all pertinent vineyard infrastructure information for easy access to entire team.
Groundwater monitoring and energy management (pump/well efficiency)
Coordinate pump tests for all sites on recurring basis and work with managers and other vendors to seek improvement.
Collect, input, analyze and report well and pump data and help assess long term water management risks and priorities.
Manage crop yield mapping program during harvest: data collection, training materials for drivers, troubleshooting data collection issues.
Research Trial Manager
Liaise with LangeTwins Winemaking team regarding vine to wine research projects.
Identify and evaluate potential research trials for wine, vine, and quality improvement.
Create, manage monitor, collect data, analyze, and present data on all LangeTwins research trials.
Plan, document, and execute research trials in the vineyard with cooperation of vineyard management team. Follow through with winemaking results and coordinate with winemaking team at LangeTwins winery as appropriate.
Create and adhere to budgets for various projects.
Sustainability Certification, Environmental Compliance, and Sustainable Program Management
Manage Lodi Rules and CCSW Certifications for all certified blocks (about 2,500 acres, 60 blocks)
Complete sustainability assessments, write action plans, coordinate changes as needed with vineyard management team, work with auditors to complete certifications.

Assist administration staff as a technical resource and vineyard liaison to ensure compliance with various State, federal and local compliance programs, e.g., Water Quality Coalitions, Nitrogen Management plans, State Water Resource Control Board, surface and groundwater monitoring, recordkeeping, and reporting.
This will include attending various local, state, and association meetings, summarizing and reporting back executive team.
Leadership and Community Participation Opportunities
• Opportunity to serve on at least one board or committee related to winegrowing or California farming. CAWG Committee, Lodi Winegrape Commission Board and/or Committee, LDGGA, Environmental Policy Boards, Farm Bureau, etc.
Other duties as assigned. This position is part of the vineyard team, a family business. No position in this company is exempt from performing any task that needs to be done on the farm. Only team-players with a “can-do” spirit need apply.
Minimum BS in viticulture or related field. Masters in Viticulture or related field preferred.
Minimum of 5 years vineyard work experience.
Proficient use of Window’s applications and databases, GIS systems, ArcGis, and especially Excel. Ability to input, analyze, and present complicated data sets to vineyard team is required.
Valid driver’s license with clean driving record.
Some financial tracking and analysis preferred (creating and adhering to budgets).
Ability to lead, motivate and supervise vineyard techs.
Ability to think critically and globally on farm-wide issues.
Ability to apply independent judgment to resolve issues.
Some Spanish-speaking ability preferred.
Communicate with other vineyard managers, equipment managers, and Pest Control Advisors in an effective and professional manner.
Must be skilled in creating and presenting results from research to vineyard team, i.e. experienced and comfortable speaking in front of people.
Must stay up-to-date on industry issues and have desire for continued education.
Must be able to lift 40 lbs (fruit samples during crop estimation time)
Must be willing to work in outdoor, farm environment (dust, heat), sometimes most of the day.
Must be able to safely operate ATV as needed for sample collection.
Some Saturday work will be required for time-sensitive projects to match with vineyard schedule, i.e. if data must be collected just prior to harvest, and harvest is on Saturday, then Saturday work may be required. Mostly during harvest season only.
