COMPANY BACKGROUND

Chappellet is recognized as one of the Napa Valley’s great family owned and operated wineries. Established in 1967, the winery has a notable heritage including its founding as the second post-prohibition winery in Napa Valley, pioneer status in high elevation hillside planting, and the development and promotion of Pritchard Hill as one of the world’s great wine regions. Chappellet’s outstanding wine craftsmanship has been consistently acknowledged since inception, and its first vintage, the 1969 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, garnered high praise and comparison to the First Growths. It is widely considered among the great California Cabernets ever produced. The wines today continue to receive favorable critical acclaim from important audiences and a strong consumer following.

POSITION SUMMARY

Chappellet Winery and Vineyard is seeking a dynamic Controller to join our finance team. The Controller is responsible for the accounting operations of the company, including the production of periodic financial reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of internal controls designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the company's reported financial results, and ensure that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles.

RESPONSIBILITIES SUMMARY

•  Manage month-end and year-end close processes
•  Prepare periodic financial statements
•  Maintain and execute a documented system of accounting policies and procedures to strengthen internal controls
•  Ensure quality control over financial transactions and financial reporting
•  Manage inventory process, including monthly reconciliation and providing input and executing enhanced internal controls
•  Manage outsourced functions
•  Manage compliance with TTB, sales taxes, and excise taxes
•  Manage ongoing accounting operations including: Billing, A/R, A/P, Inventory, Payroll, Benefits, GL Reconciliation
o Ensure that accounts payable are paid in a timely manner
o Ensure that accounts receivable are collected promptly
o Ensure payroll and benefits are processed in a timely manner
o Ensure that monthly bank reconciliations are completed
o Ensure that required debt payments are made on a timely basis
o Maintain the chart of accounts
o Maintain an orderly accounting filing system
o Maintain a system of controls over accounting transactions
o Ensure GL accounts are reconciled
•  Additional projects as directed by the CFO

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES

•  Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
•  Proficient in other Microsoft Office applications, including Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams

•  Versatile, flexible, and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm

QUALIFICATIONS

•  Education: Bachelor's degree in Business, Accounting, or Finance
•  Experience: 8+ years of progressive responsibility in accounting and finance
•  Thorough knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
•  Cost accounting experience
•  Strong leadership, communication, and project management skills
•  Knowledge of financial statement preparation
•  Experience with general ledger functions and the month-end/year-end close process
•  Demonstrated ability to supervise and motivate team
•  Experience with Navision accounting system, Jet Reports, and Commerce7 a plus
•  Experience with compliance (TTB, sales taxes, and excise taxes) a plus

WORK LOCATION/LOGISTICS

The Accounting office is located on the Chappellet property in St. Helena. The position requires collaborative work onsite in the Accounting team’s open office environment 2-3 days a week with flexibility to work remotely the other days. Work may require occasional weekend and/or evening work. Occasional travel may be required.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

This is a full-time, salaried position. Compensation is competitive and dependent upon experience. Additional benefits offered include health insurance, Paid Time Off, and employer matching 401(K).
