Job Description:

Job Purpose

The Winemaker oversees the entire production process of creating wine, including grape harvesting, crushing, fermentation, aging, blending, and bottling. He/She combines scientific concepts with practical experience to alter a wine's chemical composition and make key decisions based on the levels of acid, sugar, sulfur, and sulfite within a wine.


•  A degree in Enology or related science field is preferred, but can be substituted with comparable experience along with a minimum of 5 years winemaking experience.
•  Knowledge of grapes, growing regions, and local production and marketing regulations
•  Must possess strong leadership skills.
•  Solid track record of success in previous assignments demonstrating upward career tracking.
•  Strong communication skills
•  Must be dependable, reliable, and self-motivated.
•  Computer Knowledge a must

Duties and Responsibilities

•  Provide budget of annual costs in anticipation of projected wine sales
•  Schedule all quality grape purchases, additives and lab supplies and dry goods for bottling
•  Direct all winemaking, maintaining existing and creating new blends
•  Knowledge in all lab analysis
•  Oversee winery sanitation
•  Maintain all wine associated equipment, pumps, and bottling line
•  Manage staff
•  Maintain integrity of wines, grapes, juice filtering, blending and bottling
•  Awareness in safety protocols, if known USDA and OSHA
•  Assure proper vineyard practices are used to ensure quality
•  Participate in wine relocated expansion and development to achieve efficient goals of operations
•  Maintain positive influence to create productive environment through training and education
•  Ensure growth and stability of the company
•  Maintain government record keeping
•  Assist in the finances, P&L, balance sheet, cash flow of the winery operations
•  Working with Estate Vineyard and outside grape growers
•  Overseeing in-house tastings & blending trials
•  Attending all necessary wine events and tastings
•  Willing to travel for outside events
•  Sanitation of all equipment and facility
•  Topping and racking
•  Filtration
•  Bottling equipment set up and sanitation
•  All lab analysis
•  Maintenance of cooperage, tanks, pumps, and other equipment
•  Forklift operation
•  Operation of all harvest equipment
•  Monitoring fermentations with staff
•  Yeast and ML bacteria inoculations
•  Recordkeeping of cellar operations
•  Inventory management of supplies, bulk wine, and case goods
•  Set and implement direction on the processing of the grapes, production of wine, storage of
Product, and bottling of product
•  Set production schedules in line with the capabilities of the facility and the needs of the market
•  Manage inventory levels of supplies and materials used in the production of wine
•  Maintain records as required for meeting government and corporate requirements
•  Supervise maintenance and repair of equipment and tanks used in the cellar operation
•  Work collaboratively with farm manager to manage incoming fruit and during harvest
•  Determine the need for and manage outside contractors as needed
•  Monitor the condition of all wines to prevent spoilage
•  Assist in development of the product mix and grape needs for coming season
•  Work with sales to project the desired product mix based on the past year’s sales
•  Collaborate with the winemaking team to plan blends and products to be produced to meet the projections of the sales group
•  Lead public and private tours as needed

Physical Requirements

•  Able to work ten hour-plus shifts, with extended standing/walking.
•  Capable of lifting materials and/or product up to 50 pounds or more.
