Job Description:

The Senior Quality Assurance Technician fills an important role at the winery as they ensure that bottled wine is going to market within the specifications set by the winery and its customers. Their physical and analytical checks are essential to the product quality and product safety once the wine leaves the winery. In addition to in-process evaluations QA Technicians pre-check materials, perform essential microbiological plating, and positively contribute to the bottling line. The Senior Quality Assurance Technician is expected to take on a leadership role – which includes acting as backup to the QA Manager.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

35% Bottling Line Production QA:

Perform routine line checks using a variety of methods, including visual inspection weight and fill heights of wine in bottle.
Perform pre-acceptance inspection of corks, labels, glass, capsules.
Prepare the applicable written forms, equipment checks, and wine quality checks in order to ensure smooth start-up of the production line.
Attend bottling and production meetings with cellar and bottling supervisors and warehouse.
Calculate wine treatments as needed for bottling tanks.
Assures quality control guidelines are met by bottling line performance. Notifies appropriate personnel when issues arise.

45% Pre/Post Bottling QA:

Performs quality testing of bottling component materials such as glass, closures, labels and capsules.
Assist purchasing department with trials for product improvement and development of new packages.
Conducts microbiological plating of bottled product and recordkeeping of results.
Maintains, calibrates and troubleshoots laboratory instruments for QA.
Contributes to the general housekeeping of the laboratory.
Accurately transcribes lab results to appropriate forms or databases.
Conducts bottled product inspections on “hold” lots.
Helps to follow through on corrective actions, root cause analysis and product non-conformance reports.

20% Support:

Assists in winemaking lab during the harvest season and as needed throughout the year to maintain wine analysis skills.
Assists purchasing and custom client winemaker with post-bottling inventory of packaging goods.
Improving and/or editing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
Upholding the quality system overall, including preparing for or participating in audits as needed.

Job Requirements

Education/Experience:

BA/BS degree in a field related to wine, enology or science with 1-year relevant experience preferred.
OR AA/AS degree in a field related to wine, enology, or science with 2+ years’ relevant experience.
OR High School Diploma with 5+ years’ experience in the wine industry or quality control lab.
Experience with chemicals and related safety procedures desired.
Experience participating in audits, and upholding quality standards a plus.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Excellent communication skills, verbal and written. Proven communication skills with employees and managers of all levels.
Excellent organizational skills and able to prioritize tasks accordingly.
Good understanding of quality and lab instrumentation.
Ability to perform bottling analyses in an accurate and timely manner.
Excellent attention to detail.
Ability to contribute to a positive work environment by behaving and communicating in a manner that works well with clients, customers, coworkers and management.
Good multi-tasking and people skills for working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
Proficient in computer skills including, but not limited to, email, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel.
Basic proficiency in math, including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
Experience with scientific methods, such as laboratory procedures, working with lab equipment, and problem solving, preferred.

Other:

Ability to rotate through various work schedules to include early morning, swing shift and overtime.
Ability to occasionally travel off site to support off site bottling.
Responsible for learning, adhering to, and enforcing department and company policies and procedures, including safety.
Occasionally required to lift 50 pounds.
Travels to offsite facilities to oversee quality control of FCW wines, both bottling or warehouse locations.
