Michael David Winery is owned by brothers Michael and David Phillips, who have built their Lodi, California, winery into one of the fastest growing wineries in the United States. The Phillips brothers released their first commercial wine in 1984 under the Phillips Vineyards label after years of growing grapes for other wineries. Now celebrating more than 30 years as a bonded winery, Michael and David have over 800 acres of vineyards in Lodi. They pride themselves on their meticulous farming practices and sustainable wine grape growing, which result in superior quality in the bottle. Their hard work has paid off as the wines regularly take top awards and recognition nationwide.
The Seasonal Vineyard Field Scout is an integral member of the Viticulture team. Under the guidance of the Viticulture and/or Assistant Viticulturist the Seasonal Field Scout is responsible for weekly pest, disease and weed monitoring; as well as crop estimating and sugar sampling.
This seasonal position is a great entry level job into viticulture. Must be able to work from June through October and be available at least 4 days a week and some Saturdays. Must be able to lift up to 40lbs, have a valid California driver’s license and be able to operate an ATV. Strong work ethic and the ability to work alone are required. This is a chance to see an extensive amount of the Lodi AVA and get to know some of the basics of viticulture.
• Maintain an awareness of vine pests, diseases, disorders, and report findings to Viticulture and Assistant Viticulturist.
• Sugar samples, crop estimates, etc.
Qualifications include: High school diploma or equivalent; experience helpful but not required. Must have strong communication skills in English, Spanish helpful. Computer proficiency with good working knowledge of MS Excel and Word is needed. Possession of valid California Class C driver’s license required. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, walk on uneven ground, drive an ATV, and use scientific instruments and electronic devices.
Must be able to organize and plan work to achieve required results; handle multi-tasking situations. follow directions; and work independently and/or as a team member. Position will require working at night as well as long hours when required; carefully follow all company safety and PPE (personal protective equipment) policies and regulations. Exposure to all types of outdoor weather condition to include all levels of heat/humidity/cold; to dust, noise, pesticides, gasoline, and diesel fuels.
