One of the positive things about the wine business is that wineries and growers typically share information.

There’s a sense that a rising tide floats all boats – there aren’t many secrets. There are so many conferences dedicated to best practices and large wine companies sometimes host staff get-togethers to share insight across departments or within specific disciplines.

A recent gathering in San Francisco of wineries that are part of the Bacchus Capital Management portfolio was unique though, as it brought together staff from eight loosely affiliated wineries for the first time. The event was preceeded by a tasting of standouts from each winery.

“It laid groundwork for getting our portfolio companies and Bacchus to see a little more clearly some of the ways we’re going to be able to affect synergies going forward,” Bacchus co-founder and managing partner Peter Kaufman said.

“The winemakers felt connected and have already made plans to get together, visit each other’s wineries, and keep in contact,” Bacchus co-founder and managing partner Sam Bronfman said.
Guest speakers included technology innovator Geoff Ralston as well as leaders of such companies such as Bottlenotes, Coravin, VingDirect, and Cameron Hughes.
