Reducing vine balance to a number does little to represent the complex physiological relationship between vine and fruit.

This is one of my “pet peeves.” I have been bothered by the phrase “vine balance” ever since I was in graduate school studying viticulture. People then would throw around that term as if they had legitimate insight into what vine balance actually meant. Maybe they did, but I had never found a satisfactory definition, other than the fuzzy concept of “enough leaves to ripen the crop.” I have felt that there is more to balance than the amount of leaves or fruit...
