Like a spare tire, no one needs frost protection until they need it. A good example was the historic October 10, 2009 freeze in Washington state, a once-in-a-30-year event which plunged temperatures into the teens. Conversely, Paso Robles vineyards in Central California normally suffer eight or nine events per season, but in 2008 they had 25.
