The history of Sauvignon Blanc in the U.S. has been a fairly interesting one. According to received wisdom, the varietal was introduced into California in the 1880s by the Cresta Blanca Winery in the Livermore Valley. Since the vineyard was planted from cuttings from Château d'Yquem, Sauvignon Blanc appears to have formed the basis of the wine with which Cresta Blanca won the Grand Prix at the 1889 Paris Exposition.
