On the first of May 2004, ten new countries are due to join the European Union. This will bring the organization up to 25 nations. Eight countries are now definite, having held a referendum that approved accession into the EU. These are the Czech Republic, Hungary, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia.
