It has taken a long time but at last the USA is a major force in the UK wine market. It may seem strange that, although California was really the first 'New World' country in the mid to late 1970s to make an impact in the UK market, has only recently captured a significant market share. At the end of 1997 the US had just 3.6 percent by volume of the UK off-trade and a mere 2 percent of the on-trade.
