New Diemme Enologia MicroFlex Filter, the Intelligent Approach to Filtration

Date: 05/10/13

Canadian supplier Cellar-Tek announced the arrival of the first MicroFlex filter in Canada. In development for the last three years by Diemme Enologia in Lugo, Italy, this new filter technology is now being offered to wineries in North America.

The point man for the filter, Andy Shillington and Cellar-Tek’s technician, Justin Skladan started testing the filter with Canadian wines at Quail’s Gate Winey in Kelowna, B.C.

Quails Gate chose their toughest wine to filter, Marechal Foch, as the first candidate for the new technology and continued with Cab Sauv, Merlot and Syrah to compare the results with their traditional filtration experiences.

Seventeen- year winemaking veteran of Quails Gate, George Oake stated, “The Microflex allows me to filter our wines in a gentle and thorough manner from 42 NTUs down to 0.4 NTUs; ready for bottle in one pass without stripping color, flavour or aroma. The low labour and material costs make this the ideal filter for our winery. The Microflex would allow us to eliminate the use of diatomaceous earth in the cellar while improving the quality of filtration. Reduced cost, Reduced labour, Reduced time, Reduced water, safer, more gentle, better end product. It’s a no brainer.”

The MicroFlex filter utilizes established membrane cartridge filtration technology combined with state-of-the-art, proprietary software to automatically filter wines in a very gentle, low pressure, oxygen-free, closed system. The heart of the filter is comprised of a bank of 30” 1 micron absolute PVDF membrane cartridges which allow high flow rates with very low differential pressure. The filter is available in three model sizes based on the number of cartridges utilized. The smallest size is loaded with 12 cartridges whose rated life span is 2.4 million liters. The other two models, 24 and 48 cartridges are fully automatic with cartridge life spans of 4.8 and 9.6 million liters respectively. That works out to a filter media cost of one quarter of a cent per liter!

The low operating pressure differential allows high flow rates with virtually no stress or heat gain to wine whatsoever. There are also no perceptible changes to the wine’s organoleptic qualities immediately after filtration. This is virtually unheard of in conventional filtration.

In keeping with Diemme Enologia’s mandate to design environmentally friendly equipment, the MicroFlex filter has very low energy consumption for its flow rates and the automatic washing cycles were designed to minimize the amount of water used in the process.
