Ponzi Vineyards Hires JP Pierce as Assistant Winemaker
JP Pierce joins the Ponzi Vineyards winemaking team as Assistant Winemaker. He will oversee winery operations and act as liaison to many of the growers Ponzi has contracts with throughout the Willamette Valley.
Winemaker Luisa Ponzi enthuses, “JP will enable us to make full use of our new facility by supporting our existing team, but also by bringing increased efficiencies to the operation. In turn, this gives me more time to focus on vineyard operations and maintain our high standards in winemaking.”
With more than 10 years of experience in the wine and spirits industry, Pierce’s breadth of knowledge and commitment to quality makes him an exciting addition to the Ponzi team. His technical background includes a B.S. in Viticulture and Enology from the University of California, Davis, and a broad international background in winery operations and production.
“In addition to his formal enology and viticulture education at Davis and his experience working in wineries around the world, [JP] has also worked such varied jobs as wine steward at the Ritz-Carlton in San Francisco and Nuclear Machinist Mate in the US Navy. All of these roles make him the perfect candidate to run the day to day operations of wine production at Ponzi where having a diverse set of skills is key to success,” remarks Ponzi.
Most recently, Pierce was the Cellar Master and Facilities Manager at The Carlton Winemakers Studio in Carlton, OR. The state-of-the-art Studio accommodates production for 6 winemakers and 12 wineries. Pierce handled the facility’s operations and successfully implemented a number of improvements to the winery systems and physical building.
Pierce will work out of the Ponzi Vineyards winemaking facility, Collina del Sogno. The winery, completed in 2008 to accommodate Ponzi Vineyards’ growth in production, is a four-level, gravity-flow facility located just minutes from the Ponzi Estate Winery and Vineyard in Beaverton.
