Napa Valley Think Tank Welcomes Torey Arvik, Ph.D., as Technical Director
Napa Valley Think Tank (NVTT) is pleased to announce the addition of Torey Arvik, Ph.D., as Technical Director. Torey brings a wealth of technical expertise to the organization. He will be responsible for accelerating the organization’s growth and helping bring new and innovative analytical services to the Napa Valley winemaking community.
“I am incredibly excited to have Torey as a partner in this business. He has an impeccable reputation in the wine industry,” said Andy Erickson, Managing Partner. “He is truly an innovator, a world-class scientist, and a big thinker. He brings a new approach to many issues facing the wine industry, and the great thing is he is always seeking solutions to problems. Plus, he’s just a really good guy.”
Torey has been in the wine industry for over ten years, beginning his wine career as Development Scientist at ETS Labs. He then brought his talents to wine production as Director of Technical Services at Jackson Family Wines. In his various roles, he has had responsibility for the development of new diagnostic tools and methods, quality control and operations at multiple locations. Prior to Jackson Family Wines, Torey was a visiting scientist at the Swiss Federal Research Station and a scientist in the Food & Environmental Group at Applied Biosystems.
“I am thrilled to be part of a service oriented company like Napa Valley Think Tank,” said Torey. “The industry needs a resource center where winemakers and innovative researchers can meet face-to-face, and Napa Valley Think Tank provides that kind of forum,” he added. “My family is behind me, so the decision to take on this challenge was made easier. As a team, we will focus our efforts on offering winemakers analytical services, technical resources and quality face time.”
Torey earned his Ph.D in wine microbiology/entrepreneurship and personal enterprise at Cornell University in 2003. He is a well-known industry expert, international speaker and published author of technical articles in microbiology. He is a member of the Gold Standards Group, a member and reviewer of the American Society for Enology and Viticulture and a member of the American Society of Brewing Chemists.
NVTT opened its doors in August 2010, offering analytical wine testing services, winemaking supplies and tools for Valley winemakers. In addition, NVTT hosts seminars and offers other technical services such as trials, blendings and tastings to winemakers. In 2011, NVTT expanded its analytical services to include a wide range of phenolic, aromatic and microbiology testing. Since its inception, NVTT has worked to establish relationships with a number of prominent winemakers in Napa Valley and beyond, and in April 2011 announced a strategic partnership with Societe d’Application de Recherche de Conseil en Oenologie (SARCO), the preeminent analytical laboratory in Bordeaux, France. The vision has always been to be the technical focal point for the winemaking community.
