As of Monday, March 22, Ted Farthing has resigned his position of Executive Director of the Oregon Wine Board (OWB) and the Oregon Winegrowers Association, a job he began in 2004. Farthing is a marketing veteran who relocated from New York where he previously held positions as brand manager for Moët & Chandon, Dom Pérignon and Ruffino. He also had been director of marketing for change management consultancy Mercer Delta Consulting.
Collaborating with his Board of Directors and other industry thought leaders, he repositioned the "Oregon wine" category, celebrating the many common threads that unite the diverse winegrowing regions. He also secured a significant federal grant to rebuild the oregonwine.org website into a wine country tourism resource as well as an e-commerce platform for the state's 450+ wineries.
Farthing reinvigorated Oregon's export program, dramatically growing Oregon wine distribution in Canada, Japan and the U.K. Most recently, Farthing and the OWB created the Oregon Certified Sustainable Wine brand, cementing Oregon's environmental leadership reputation.
Farthing has said he wants to pursue a career in marketing consulting.
As of Monday, Board Chair Sam Tannahill of A to Z Wineworks and Francis Tannahill Wine Company will assume the role of Acting Executive Director until a new Director is hired.
“We wish Ted well in this exciting new chapter in his career," Tannahill said. "We're grateful for all he has done to build our marketing capabilities and position the Oregon wine category for success in the recovery and we look forward to focusing on what's coming next for our industry."
A search committee was formed Monday and will create a new job description. They expect the process to take 3-6 months before a new Director will be hired.
In the meanwhile, all strategic plans and goals will be carried out as usual. There will be no changes in direction during this interim period.
