After two and a half years as assistant winemaker at Kelly Fleming Wines in Calistoga, Rebecca George has been promoted to winemaker. “Since joining the winery in 2011, Becky has gradually increased her responsibilities and we are thrilled to offer her this new opportunity. We are excited to have her leading our winemaking team in crafting the great wines we have come to love from this estate,” said proprietor and founder Kelly Fleming in making the announcement.
George holds a B.S. in viticulture and enology from the University of California, Davis. She spent a year at the University of Adelaide in Australia studying in that college’s Viticulture & Oenology program. Among her professional awards was being a recipient of the coveted Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin Fellowship to work in Burgundy in 2005. “I feel grateful to have had the opportunity to live and work in Burgundy, especially at such a celebrated house as Meo-Camuzet. It was there that I learned the importance of the vineyard work that happens during the growing season, before the grapes ever come in, George said.
George has worked harvests both in the cellar and the lab at a number of distinguished wineries around the world, including Artesa in Carneros, Domaine Méo-Camuzet (in Vosne-Romanée, Burgundy), Yarra Burn Winery (Yarra Glen, Australia), Williams Selyem Winery (Healdsburg) and Marcassin Wine Company (Sonoma). She worked as a harvest vineyard intern for Rios Farming Company in St. Helena; she was the assistant winemaker Schramsberg & J. Davies Vineyards in Calistoga for two years, after having served as the enologist there and prior to that, as a laboratory intern. George came to Kelly Fleming in 2011 as the assistant winemaker, managing the production of Sauvignon Blanc and Estate Cabernet Sauvignon under the direction of winemaker Celia Welch.
George lives in the Napa Valley and spends her days off exploring the outdoors, practicing yoga and eating/drinking well with good friends.
Located at 2339 Pickett Road in Calistoga, Kelly Fleming founded her eponymous winery in 1998. Kelly Fleming Wines is named for the proprietor, who moved to the Napa Valley from Arizona to create her dream of a small family winery. The 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon was the winery’s first release. Current releases are 2010 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, $110; 2012 Sauvignon Blanc, $36 and 2010 Big Pour Napa Red, $75. The winery produces approximately 3,000 cases each year.
The estate encompasses 300 acres in Simmons Canyon and twelve acres are planted to Cabernet Sauvignon. The property also includes extensive gardens and orchards, including an olive grove and apple, almond, pear, fig and plum trees, which Fleming harvests for entertaining at the winery. The handsome stone-faced 5,000 square foot winery was designed by Taylor Lombardo Architects: one of its features is a 7,000 square feet limestone cave extending 220 feet into the hillside.
