Update Software, Inc. Hires Raleigh Brown

Update Software, Inc., developers of VinNOW software is pressing forward with slated software upgrades and development plans and announced the placement of an additional programmer to help meet these goals—Raleigh Brown.

After graduating from James Madison University and working a few years in the finance industry, Raleigh enrolled as a full time computer programming student. His first programming position came in the early 1980's for SAGE Software Systems in Rockville, Maryland. In the late '80s, he worked for Wyeth Pharmaceuticals in Pennsylvania in as a programmer-analyst supporting sales and marketing.

Brown returned to California in 1989, working for Kaiser-Permanente of Northern California as a technology analyst and application programmer. Part of several project teams, he designed and developed online medical records systems for the health care provider. This encompassed coding applications for pen-based tablet computers, imaging systems and other emerging technologies. Brown transitioned to being an independent consultant in the early 1990's and developed software for a variety of businesses. Clients included American Building Maintenance, Arterial Vascular Engineering, Pacific Bell, Legacy Marketing and Kaiser-Permanente.

Brown's introduction to the wine industry came in the late 1990's when consulting on a number of small projects for Kendall-Jackson Winery. When Kendall-Jackson (now Jackson Family Estates) later decided to develop their own winemaking software, he was brought in as a full time consultant. He helped determine the foundation technologies that would be used and assisted other developers through the learning curve involved in this new (to them) domain. The end product known as BIMS, or Bulk Inventory Management System, encompasses all phases of the winemaking process from monitoring grapes in the field though to final bottling. The front end logic and user interface was programmed in MS Visual Basic. Having been involved in numerous projects over the years within the wine industry, Brown's favorite work is developing software for people who keep the wine flowing
