Rudd Oakville Estate, Leslie Rudd’s esteemed vineyards set in Oakville, Napa Valley, announced today that it has selected Frederick Ammons as winemaker. Frederick will fulfill his new role as of August 1, 2013. He brings 15 years of winemaking experience in both France and California, including positions at The Napa Valley Reserve, Opus One Winery and Seavey Vineyard.
“A strong leader with a lifelong farming background, Frederick brings with him a highly vineyard-centric approach and a deep passion for winemaking,” said Leslie Rudd. “He is the ideal fit for Rudd, and I am pleased to welcome him to our team.”
A rising star in the wine industry, Ammons most recently served as winemaker for The Napa Valley Reserve, where he joined the team as their first winemaker in 2004. During his time at the Reserve, he evolved the vineyard’s production from winemaking to winegrowing.
A fifth-generation Coloradoan raised on a farm, he first became interested in wine during his undergraduate studies in biology at the University of Colorado. Upon graduation, he enrolled in the University of Bordeaux, where he became the sixth American to complete the competitive Diplôme National d'Enologue from the prestigious Faculté d'Œnologie. During the four years he lived in the region, Ammons worked at various chateaux, including Château Boutisse and Château Pape Clément, and studied the influences of seasonal variations on vintage and terroir.
“Rudd Oakville Estate has always stood out to me as one of the greatest vineyard terroirs I’ve seen,” said Ammons. “During my first experience working in Napa Valley, I noticed the red, rocky soils at Rudd Oakville Estate and imagined the great wine this site had the potential to produce. Twelve years later, I’m looking forward to working with the Rudd team on the land that I had admired for years and embracing the mission of continuous improvement in the vineyards and in the bottle.”

The 55-acre estate is nestled on an appellation known for outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux blends; the red, rocky soils are planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Merlot. A 12-acre Mt. Veeder property at 1600 ft elevation complements the valley floor estate and is planted to white varietals including Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Sauvignon Gris and Sauvignon Vert.
