Sonoma Valley’s Ledson Winery & Vineyards has hired British winemaker Matt Standing to round out what its international winemaking team. Matt joins Steve Ledson, owner and head winemaker; David Ramey, consulting winemaker, formally of Dominus, Rudd Estate and currently Ramey Wine Cellars; Andrew Bilenkij, Australian winemaker who trained with Phillip Shaw, two- time winner of the coveted Winemaker of the Year at the London International Wine and Spirit Competition; and Dr. Daniel Roberts, also known as “Dr. Dirt,” consulting viticulturist.
Ledson also recently purchased the famous Mountain Terraces vineyard in Sonoma, which is a 125-acre site with 85 acres planted to vineyards in the MayacamasMountains.
Steve Ledson enthused, “Since my grandfather came over from England at the turn of the century, bringing Matt on board seemed like a perfect fit.” Standing worked the harvest of 2011 with Ramey before returning to the U.K. to complete his studies earning an Honors Degree in Viticulture and Enology at Plumpton College in Sussex, England. “Matt proved to be such an intrepid international student of wine that we were thrilled when he wanted to join our team,” added David Ramey.
Standing also worked two vintages at up and coming sparkling wine producer Wiston Estate and worked in Australia as well.
Local builder, philanthropist and fifth generation Sonoma winemaker Steve Ledson and his family have been making wines in Sonoma County for the past 150 years. Steve took over in 1993 with the opening of the LedsonCastle, known throughout the world as The Castle, and he is producing over 8o different wines.
