New Wines of Greece Presents 1st Annual Greek Wine Industry Award To Wine Writer and Educator Tara Q. Thomas

Renowned wine writer and educator Tara Q. Thomas is being recognized by New Wines of Greece for her significant contributions and passionate support of the modern revival of the Greek wine industry and her efforts to introduce the wineries and indigenous varieties of this ancient wine culture. The award was created to acknowledge outstanding contributions to the Greek Wine Industry in the fields of education, promotion, production and science.

On Saturday, March 9, 2013 at the Detrop-Oenos Food & Wine Fair in the city of Thessaloniki, Greek wine industry leaders will gather to formally present Tara with the 1st Annual “Greek Wine Industry Award 2013”. Following the ceremony, awards will also be presented to top rated wines from the 13th Thessaloniki International Wine Competition taking place this week, sponsored by the Wines of Northern Greece and judged by wine professionals from around the world. Detrop-Oenos, a bi-annual exhibition of the Greek food and wines industries, will also highlight Greek gastronomy through a series of demonstrations and workshops for over 10,000 visitors. In addition, top wine and food professionals from the U.S. will be attending.

Sofia Perpera, director of the Greek Wine Bureau of North America, noted that Tara was “One of the first to recognize the potential of our sector. Her passionate, professional and in-depth approach to reporting and education should be seen as a model for the industry.” Perpera continues, “We also appreciate the foresight that Wine & Spirits Magazine incorporates into its philosophy of reporting on emerging wine regions and trends, such as Greek wine, and for giving Tara the opportunity to add Greece as one of her featured wine regions.”

Tara started her career in the restaurant business at the age of 15, putting herself through college by cooking, and ultimately secured a degree at the Culinary Institute of America. She joined Wine & Spirits Magazine in 1997. Her introduction to Greek wine actually began during a CIA externship cooking in Greece, and upon joining Wine & Spirits she passionately re-introduced Greek wines to the team, sourcing the finest examples to showcase the winemaking renaissance in progress. Since then, she has written about Greek wine for Wine & Spirits but also for the Denver Post, Culture, Tasting Table, Gourmet.com, and other outlets. In reflecting on her experience with Greek wine, Tara noted, “The industry is so ancient and yet so new, and the material so unique with a variety of grapes, climates, and philosophies. I really believe it’s one of the most exciting places in the world when it comes to wine.”
