The growth in hiring activity is being fueled by a higher number of job postings in the winemaking and hospitality sectors. Jobs in the winemaking category jumped 31% over 2013 and the hospitality category rose by 10%. The overall index grew by 15% over March 2013.

Winter's polar vortex has wiped out most of Ohio's wine grape crop. The bitter cold was the worst for grape growers in 20 years, said Andy Troutman of the Winery at Wolf Creek in Norton and Troutman Vineyards south of Wooster in Wayne County. He estimated that "at least half" of his 2014 grape crop on 19 acres at the two locations has been destroyed, and that will heavily impact wine production in 2015 and 2016.

Ecologic Brand Inc. expects to quickly add a second work shift to its paper-bottle manufacturing operation in Manteca and further expand to a third by year's end as a result of a new contract to supply containers for the Paper Boy brand of wines. Officials of the Oakland-based container company said Friday that the deal means additional jobs at their 60,000-square-foot Manteca plant but are not yet sure how many openings will result.
