Vintage 2013 Remains True to Oregon's Willamette Valley , Home to Inspiring and Challenging Winegrowing Conditions

Date: 10/22/13

PRESS RELEASE

October 22, 2013, Dayton, OR – Stoller Family Estate, the largest contiguous vineyard in Oregon’s Dundee Hills, completed its 17th vintage on Friday, October 18, five weeks after harvest began at the property. Together, vineyard manager, Rob Schultz, and winemaker, Melissa Burr, processed 250 tons of fruit for the Stoller winery, which will translate to about 16,000 cases of wine for the 2013 vintage. Schultz harvested an additional 275 tons for the winery’s vineyard clients, bringing the estate’s total to 525 tons of grapes.

Winemaker Melissa Burr, who just completed her 11th Stoller harvest, is very enthusiastic about the vintage despite concerns regarding the record rainfall that occurred in late September. According to Burr: “Challenging weather conditions are nothing new to Willamette Valley winegrowers—we’ve had rain in almost every harvest I’ve worked, so we are more prepared here than in other growing regions for a dramatic change of course. In fact, that every year is different here in Oregon is inspiring to me because it is one of the reasons we have truly unique vintages.”

As far as the wines from the 2013 vintage are concerned, Burr comments, “I’m seeing a trio of exciting characteristics: vibrant aromatics, bright acidity and moderate alcohol levels around 13 percent—all of which are due to the cooler finish to the season. While the rain was certainly a challenge, it did not overshadow the near ideal conditions experienced during the majority of the growing season. I’m confident that Stoller and our industry colleagues will make beautiful wines from this memorable year.”
