Raphaël Brisbois, the director of winemaking at Rack & Riddle Custom Wine Services, passed away from cancer on Aug. 22, 2013 at the age of 62. He is survived by his wife Sylvie; two sons Ludovic and Benoit and his two grandchildren.
"Raphaël’s passing leaves a huge hole in our hearts and of anyone who knew him. His talents as a winemaker and particularly his industry leadership in the production of sparkling wines, will be terribly missed," Rack & Riddle managing members Rebecca Faust and Bruce Lundquist said in a statement.
Brisbois led the production of client and branded wines at Rack & Riddle, as well as all fruit sourcing. He held a master’s degree in viticulture and enology from École Nationale Supérieure d'Agronomie in Montpellier, France. He specialized in sparkling wines, and led both sparkling and still winemaking operations around the world on four continents. Brisbois began the first sparkling wine operation in India to be made by méthode champenoise, a labor-intensive approach involving fermentation in the bottle
"While there are no words to express the depth of our sorrow over Raphaël’s passing, we do take comfort that his unflagging pursuit of great wines will remain to help guide us professionally. Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers. Our memories of his dedication, his eternal optimism, and his wit, will forever be etched in our hearts.," said Faust and Lundquist.
A small, informal graveside service was held in his honor on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013 at the Santa Rosa Memorial. As an expression of sympathy, the family prefers that memorial contributions be made in his memory to the charity of your choice.
