Sonoma County Winegrowers Commission 2013 Wine Industry Economic Research

Date: 05/22/13

Research to provide updates and additional measurements following up 2005 data

May 20, 2013, Santa Rosa, CA -- Sonoma County Winegrowers, in partnership with Sonoma County Vintners and the Sonoma County Farm Bureau, are initiating new economic research to measure the full economic impact of winegrowing and winemaking in Sonoma County, as well as the overall impact of agriculture in Sonoma County. Sonoma County Winegrowers has retained Stonebridge Research to conduct the research, following up on research last conducted eight years ago in 2005. The full report is expected to be completed in the fall and released to membership and the public in early 2014.

“There has been significant growth in the revenue that growers, vintners and other agricultural interests contribute to the economy of Sonoma County, both directly and indirectly, over the last eight years, and we are pleased to be getting this research underway to obtain current tangible numbers,” said Karissa Kruse, president, Sonoma County Winegrowers. “Wine and agriculture play an integral role in our economic successes here, and we are confident that the new data will substantiate that fact.”

“We are fortunate in Sonoma County to have a diversity of agriculture in addition to growing and making wine, which helps define our region for consumers and visitors,” said Sonoma County Vintners executive director Honore Comfort. “We eagerly anticipate having current economic figures to share, and look forward to getting a much better sense of the full picture of agriculture in Sonoma County with this research.”

“Agriculture is the engine that drives our economy, said Lex McCorvey, executive director of the Sonoma County Farm Bureau. “From our fertile fields to coastal hills, thousands of jobs are directly rooted to the diverse bounty of our local farms. Whether it be growing or processing grapes, milk or other crops for the farmers market or world market--this research will show the amazing depth and diversity of Sonoma County agriculture.“
