Hess Shirtail Creek Chardonnay is now available in California on tap, in a small barrel system provided by Free Flow Wines and distributed by Young’s Market Company. Plans call for offering the barrels, which hold the equivalent of 26 750ml bottles or 130 five-ounce pours, in Arizona and Las Vegas later this year.
Hess also expects to begin offering Artezin Mendocino Zinfandel using the same delivery system this Fall.
Hess Shirtail Creek Vineyard Chardonnay is a popular on-premise only offering produced with no oak in a style that pairs well with a wide variety of restaurant cuisine. It currently is offered in 750ml bottles in screw-cap, and will continue to be available in that bottle.
The delivery system offers advantages for restaurateur by-the-glass programs. With no corks to pull and no bottles to stock or inventory, staff efficiency increases. Wine remains as flavorful as the winemaker intended, with the 130th pour as fresh and consistent as the first pour, regardless of how long it takes to fully use the barrel. Environmental impacts are reduced by eliminating glass and the need to recycle bottles. Packaging, waste and transportation energy impacts compared to the equivalent bottles of wine, are all reduced.
