Annual Wine Shipping Report from ShipCompliant and Wines & Vines Shows First Ever Decrease in Average Price Per Bottle Shipped but increase in total Sales to a record $1.57 Billion
by Press Release

Growing at a rate far exceeding the overall growth of the American wine retail sector, winery-to-consumer direct shipments of wine grew to $1.57 Billion dollars in 2013 according to a report released today prepared by ShipCompliant and Wines & Vines. The new report, based on millions of transactions from calendar year 2013, also detected the first reduction in average price per bottle of wine shipped since the channel was first tracked in 2010.

The just-released comprehensive annual report on winery-to-consumer shipping can be downloaded at http://www.shipcompliant.com/shippingreport. The report examines from where wine is being shipped, which types of wineries are shipping, which types of wines are most commonly shipped, pricing in the direct shipping channel as well as to which states wines are being shipped. The new report also provides a look into the future of winery to consumer shipping by estimating growth in the channel over the next ten years.

A Roadmap Through The Direct Shipping Channel

“Working with Wines & Vines we are able to provide an extraordinarily vivid picture of the fastest growing wine sales channel today,” said ShipCompliant Vice President Jeff Carroll. “The 2014 Direct Shipping Report uses sophisticated modeling, statistics and analysis to provide the wine industry with a valuable roadmap through the direct shipping marketplace.”

Among the reports findings are:

-In 2013 the volume of shipments increased 9.3% to 3.47 million cases, while total sales of winery-to-consumer shipments increased 7.7% to $1.57 Billion

-2013 was the first year that the average price per bottle of wine dropped from the prior year and rested at $37.78

-Shipments from Napa Valley represented nearly 50% of the total value of the channel

-Sonoma County and Oregon experienced explosive growth in direct shipments in 2013

-Shipments of Pinot Noir continue to increase across the country

-With only modest assumptions concerning growth, the direct to consumer shipping could grow to $3.2 billion in ten years.

“In collaboration with ShipCompliant, we are excited to provide data and analysis on this important wine channel to serve the wineries and allied industries responsible for its continued growth,” said Chet Klingensmith, publisher of Wines & Vines.
