Title: Lab Technician for 2014 Harvest
Duration: August through November
Background: An excellent opportunity to work with an exceptional winemaking team on highly acclaimed wines. Hartford Family Winery is a family owned winery located in the heart of the Russian River Valley focusing on ultra-premium Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and old-vine Zinfandel. Hartford Family Winery specializes in single vineyard bottlings from the coolest regions of the Russian River Valley, Sonoma Coast, Anderson Valley and Carneros AVAs.
Position Summary: The harvest lab technician will be expected to work closely with the full-time Lab Technician and Assistant Winemaker to perform daily sample preparations and chemical analysis of must, fermenting wines, and finished wines. The harvest lab technician will work within established operating procedures to obtain samples, perform chemical analysis, and solution and reagent preparation in order to achieve optimum analytical quality standards. Depending on harvest workload, this position may also be required to assist in the cellar as needed (pump-overs, additions, etc). Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Sampling grapes, juices, fermenting musts and wines for analysis
• Performing pH, TA, brix on grape, juice and must samples
• Performing all routine wine chemistry analysis
• Performing enzymatic analysis using a spectrophotometer
• Reagent preparation (acids, bases, buffers, reference standards)
• Routine equipment maintenance
• Understanding hazardous material and safety procedures
Qualifications/Skills: The qualified candidate will have a strong science background with some laboratory and/or winery work. The ability to work in a team environment is essential; candidate must work harmoniously with co-workers and perform responsibilities in a manner exhibiting the highest quality standards. Working various shifts, including weekends and overtime will be expected on a regular basis. This position requires excellent organizational and communication skills. Ability to read and interpret cellar work orders and work lists, attention to safety regulations and procedures is required. The ability to lift 50 pounds on an occasional basis, stand for long periods of time, climb stairs and be comfortable with heights are all requirements of this position.
